Exploring LIFT: What I Learned During My First Week on the Job

About this article: Ellie Allen-Bathe, Content Marketing Manager, joined the Flexware Innovation team on April 7 with an initial focus on our LIFT product. This article chronicles her educational journey from new hire to LIFT subject matter expert (in training). Welcome to the team, Ellie!

Aside from its catchy name and a few capabilities that seemed straight out of a science fiction novel, I didn’t know much about LIFT before starting my new job at Flexware Innovation. So, during my first week, I set out to understand it.

If you’re also curious about LIFT, dive in and discover what I learned—and how it can help your business streamline material movement.

The Complexity of Intralogistics

My first goal was to get familiar with the problem LIFT is designed to solve. I don’t have a manufacturing background, so wrapping my head around how materials move throughout a facility—also known as intralogistics—was difficult.

After spending hours attempting to understand the purpose of each system and resource, I realized it wasn’t just my inexperience that was making things confusing. These processes are genuinely complex, and that’s the heart of the problem. Since intralogistics workflows are dynamic and intricate, automating them can be a challenge.

The Limitations of Automated Vehicles

Now that I had grasped the problem, I was starting to understand why simply investing in automated vehicles like Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) and Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) wasn’t enough. Although automated vehicles are great at moving various materials within a facility, they can’t make decisions like humans.

For instance, a human might notice a closed door and decide to open it or find an alternative route. Automated vehicles don’t have that level of decision-making built in. That’s why they need to communicate with humans, sensors, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), and enterprise systems in order to complete complex and dynamic tasks.

Dive deeper into the limitations of automated vehicles in this blog, “Interoperability vs. Orchestration: Why Interoperability Alone Isn’t Enough.”

The Integration Challenge

At this point in my research, the solution seemed simple: make sure the automated vehicles can communicate with key systems. However, I quickly learned that getting these systems to talk to each other is another big issue.

Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) allow software systems to exchange data, so many businesses assume that since their automated vehicles come with fleet management software and an API, they’re all set. Unfortunately, this isn’t the case. While APIs enable communication, they don’t guarantee that data is shared in the correct format or structure. For true system integration, you need middleware—a software that connects different systems so they can share data in the right format.

Take a closer look at APIs with this blog, “Intralogistics Integration: Why Middleware is the Key to Overcoming API Limitations.”

Since integrating systems can be complex and require specialized expertise, businesses often turn to suppliers for help. While full-service original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and integrators offer integration services, they tend to operate like a “black box,” meaning you can’t make changes or updates on your own. Relying on the supplier for every adjustment can be both expensive and time-consuming.

What I initially thought was a simple fix quickly started to feel like a Sisyphean task. Fortunately, this was the turning point in my research, when I began to explore LIFT.

The Path to Cohesion

LIFT is a system-agnostic, intralogistics middleware built to connect and orchestrate automated vehicles, systems, and processes. But LIFT isn’t just any middleware. It’s a powerful platform with advanced features, including:

  • Centralized multi-agent orchestration
  • Robust integration
  • Real-time monitoring and alerts
  • Advanced user management and security

LIFT’s intuitive drag-and-drop interface empowers non-technical users to build integrations, accelerating implementation and reducing the need for highly technical resources or third-party integration.

All of these capabilities make LIFT the ideal solution for businesses looking to automate their intralogistics processes. By reducing integration effort, streamlining complex coordination, accelerating deployment, delivering full operational visibility, and ensuring long-term scalability and flexibility, LIFT optimizes material movement.

It might only be my first week, but the benefits of LIFT are already clear to me. That said—don’t just take my word for it. Talk to the experts who know our product inside and out. Contact us today to start transforming your operations.
